Obituary

Ramona Jean Fischer, 77, of Johnstown, CO passed away October 7, 2019 in Greeley, CO.

In 1942 there was immense joy in the home of Robert Warren Grey and Beulah May Story as they welcomed their first child Ramona on March 7th, in Miller South Dakota. Ramona’s parents supported the family through hard work and fortitude on a family farm where they lived until 1990. Ramona’s father served on township and county school boards. He was especially proud of holding the office of deacon for the Sunbeam Congregation Church.

Over the next fourteen years three brothers, two, six and fourteen years younger joined the family on the farm. The home was continually full of laughter with devoted parents that always looked for the bright side in every event. Christmas was a special event and the family always spent time together and only essential work (like feeding livestock) was allowed.

Ramona attended a one-room, "Little House on the Prairie" school and didn't have a classmate until she was in fifth grade. Ramona’s most enduring memory of this time was sitting on the floor against the wall under the chalk board beside one of the older students reading to them and enthralled by what they read to her. A latter wonderful life impact experience that Ramona wrote about was being selectively chosen by the superintendent to write a weekly column about school activities for the town’s newspaper. Ramona’s most memorable lesson from her parents was the value of education. Honoring their belief and sacrifices was the main reason she selected a profession in the field of education. Ramona graduated from Miller High School, received a Bachelor of Science degree from Northern State University in Aberdeen and a Master of Science in reading from the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley.

Ramona meet Frank at a college hang out in Aberdeen, SD. For dates the young couple went to college events, the movies, bowling, or played cards with Frank’s brother and wife, along other mutual friends. The morning of December 28, 1963 was a warm and clear day in Miller, SD for the loving couple to be united in marriage at the Catholic Church. Ramona’s aunt Ruby Lostrom from California attended, and her uncle Demaree Lee Grey from Seattle sang at the ceremony.

Ramona’s first teaching position was just north of Aberdeen at Barnard High School with the
English Department. Followed by two rewarding years teaching at the at the lllif High School. Ramona and Frank relocated to Colorado in 1966 blaming the low teachers'salaries, poor economy, and terrible weather. In 1968 Frank was transferred to Fort Morgan from his job in Sterling. Ramona arrived in Fort Morgan with a four-year-old and expecting a second child. Always the devoted mother, Ramona waited until Carla started kindergarten before accepting her first contract position as a substitute for three semesters. Ramona proudly held a position at Fort Morgan Junior High for twenty-nine years. She also taught summer school and speech at Fort Morgan High School, composition and literature at Morgan Community College. Ramona would write about how gratifying it was to witness the growth and maturity of former middle school in high school or college classes. Her greatest career joy was planning the yearly Read Across America Day activities to honor Dr. Seuss an author she greatly admired.

Ramona and Frank developed a lifetime love of travel after buying their first camper when Greg was a baby. As often as they could, the close family took trips back to South Dakota, national parks and other places of interest. Ramona loved nature, she loved visiting Rocky Mountain National park in all seasons. In the summer to hike, in the fall to see the aspen changing, in the winter to cross country ski. And in the spring to enjoy the beautiful wild flowers. She loved gardening and nurtured a beautiful rose garden in her homes in Fort Morgan and Johnstown.
They belonged to two camping groups and spent 14 winters in winters in Arizona where she was introduced to the Red Hatters and had the opportunity to expand her passion for quilting and square dancing.
When Frank and Ramona retired, they left Fort Morgan moving to Johnstown to be closer to Carla and Greg and to spend time with their granddaughter Ashley. Ramona loved attending all of Ashley’s many activities and spent hours reading, playing games, and sewing doll clothes with Ashley.
Loving, compassionate, and always kind, Ramona lived a life rich in faith and family, with adventurist sprit. With infectious blue eyes and a heart that knew no stranger, Ramona welcomed everyone with warmth and comfort. She loved her family, always wanting the best for them and never forgot a birthday cake. Ramona greatest joy was time spent with family and friends.
Ramona is survived by her husband, Frank Fischer of Johnstown; daughter, Carla Hewitt (Randy)
of Windsor, CO; son, Greg Fischer of Lakewood, CO; brother, Kelvin Grey (Carol) of Miller, SD
and granddaughter, Ashley Hewitt of Denver, CO.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Beulah May Grey; and brothers, Larry
and Gary Grey.

Life Celebration will be at 1:30 p.m., Sunday, October 20, 2019 at Adamson Life Celebration
Home with reception to follow.

Mrs. Fischer was so very kind. When I moved to Fort Morgan to start 7th grade in a bigger, public school, she was there for me. Her kind, gentle personality made my scary life much better. I remember her classroom well, on the 2nd floor, south side of the junior high school. My life, both then and now, is better from having her as a teacher. My condolences to the family.
