Darlene Elizabeth Helzer passed away on May 10, 2019 after suffering from the effects of Alzheimer's the past two years.
Darlene was born April 16, 1933 in Ft. Collins, Colorado to Herman and Odelia (Hergert) Galyardt. She was raised and educated in the Fort Collins area and graduated from Timnath High School on May 10, 1951.
On May 25, 1952, she married Richard E. Helzer. After their marriage, they moved to the Greeley area. Early in marriage, Darlene was a mother and homemaker while Rich farmed in the Greeley, Eaton and Gilcrest areas.
After moving into Greeley, Darlene was employed by School District 6 for six years as a “lunch lady.” About 1969, Darlene went to work for Miller Feedlots in LaSalle. She did bookkeeping and other office management duties. In 1992, Darlene retired from Miller Feedlots after 23 years of employment. She always spoke fondly of her time working there and of the many good friends she made. She held a lifelong respect for Jim Miller.
Darlene enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Camping and traveling were other activities Darlene enjoyed. Rich and Darlene shared many adventures with special friends, Harold and Marilyn Lesser. One of their standing appointments was for the four of them to have supper on Friday nights. It was a tradition for over 45 years with very few Fridays missed. Family knew not to schedule anything for Friday nights.
Darlene was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Greeley. For many years she sat in the pew next to a certain stained glass window on the north side. That was “her” spot.
Darlene is survived by two sons. Richard (Kristi) of Greeley. Dennis (Cindy) of Pittsford, New York. She is also survived by grandson Ben Helzer (Annie) and great-grandson Finley and “bonus” great granddaughter Bri all of Greeley; as well as granddaughter Alison Bonefant (Jayson) and great-grandson Jaxson Bonefant of Fairport, New York. Other great grandchildren are Teagan and Shyla Richardson of Saukville, Wisconsin. Surviving siblings include Darlene’s twin sister Arlene Propp and sister Carolyn Arnold both of Fort Collins, and her brother Don (Patsy) Galyardt of Loveland. Niece Sharon Brunner and sister-in-law Florence Helzer were treasured visitors. Darlene is survived by numerous other nieces, nephews and relatives from both the Galyardt and Helzer families.
Darlene was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her grandson Joey Helzer and her granddaughter Julie Richardson.
The family offers special thanks to all the staff at Ashley Manor for their patient, kind and loving care of Darlene during her final days. You treated Darlene, and all who visited her, in a compassionate way that helped us navigate the difficult journey through the battle with Alzheimer’s.
Memorial gifts can be made to Our Saviors Lutheran Church of Greeley in care of Adamson Life Celebration Home, 2000 47th Avenue, Greeley, Colorado 80634.
