Gary Edward Simpson
Gary passed away at home on December 21, 2018 after a long battle in the hospital.
He was born on November 28, 1937 in Greeley, Colorado to Leo Boyd Simpson and Ona Arlene (Armstrong) Simpson. He grew up in Ault on the family farm. He graduated from Ault High School in 1955. Following graduation Gary enlisted in the Navy. He sailed around both the North and South poles twice. Also during his time he played on an all-star softball team that toured and played in Japan.
After being honorably discharged he returned home and married Darlene Caton on September 15, 1957. He worked in road construction helping to build on the Rabbit Ears pass project while living in Estes Park, Co. On Nov 15, 1958 twins Cheri and Jerry were born. The family moved back to Ault to the family farm where he continued to farm with his dad in the Ault and Galeton areas until the death of his father in 1974. Daughter Teri was born Feb 10, 1962. While farming Gary fed lambs in the winter until changing to swine in the early 1970’s.
While his first love was farming, Gary also had a love to serve his community. Starting with being a leader and coach in the local 4-H club. Gary always encouraged the importance of doing your best to succeed or to win, but also stressed that you could win and still show good sportsmanship at the same time. Gary followed that philosophy in all the organizations that he served on. Lone Tree and Collins Ditch boards, Ault/Pierce Fire board, North Weld County Water District, North Poudre Water District, Tri District Filter Plant, Highland RE9 School board, Colorado Pork Producers, National Pork Producers and National Pork Producers Legislative delegate while serving as President of these boards for many, many years.
Gary and Darlene also loved to cook and cater for large groups. Their catering company started out to promote pork and later evolved into just a love of sharing good food with old and new friends and family.
Gary was married to Darlene for 54 years until the time of her passing in 2011. Gary later remarried on Feb 14, 2015 to Valerie (Snider) Simpson.
Gary is survived by his wife Valerie, daughter Cheri (Loren) Helzer, son Jerry (De) Simpson, daughter Teri Simpson, grandson Cliff (Heather) Simpson, granddaughter Catherine (Kyle) Beauchamp, Grandson Clay (Nikkie) Simpson, granddaughter Danielle Rigg and granddaughter Coree Cogswell and 9 great grandchildren; step brother, Kenny Crowder; and a large extended loving family.
