Jane Emily Rumrill, 77, passed away peacefully January 21, 2018, at home in Ankeny, Iowa.
She was the seventh of nine children born to Albin and Emily (Minneart) Johnson on August 26, 1940. She grew up on the family farm in Orland Township near Madison, South Dakota. She had a happy childhood filled with days of playing with sisters and cousins, riding her horse and helping her brothers with farm work. After graduation from Orland High School in 1958, Jane earned her degree in nursing from Presentation School of Nursing in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
On July 29, 1961, she married Robert (Bob) Rumrill in their hometown, Madison. Bob’s career as a high school coach and teacher led them to various towns in South Dakota and eastern Colorado. Along the way, they had five children. They finally settled in LaSalle, Colorado, the place they called home for 38 years. Jane returned to nursing when the baby of the family entered school. She found her passion in elder care, serving as a staff nurse and administrator at several homes until her retirement in 2003.
Jane served on LaSalle’s town board, enjoyed the friendships of many, and relished her role as grandmother. Her greatest joy came from reunions with her family and took any excuse to travel to see brothers, sisters and children. Bob and Jane moved to Ankeny, Iowa, in December of 2015 to be with two of their daughters as Alzheimer’s disease claimed Jane’s health. She was lovingly cared for and surrounded by her family to the end.
Jane is survived by her husband of 56 years, Bob; children, Renee Rumrill, DVM of Montrose, Colorado, Paul Rumrill of LaSalle, Joel and Karen (Wottge) Rumrill of Salem, Oregon and their children Mackenzie and Cole, Leslie Brand of Ankeny, Iowa, and Andrea and John Walter and their children Kade, Grace, Jane and Mary of Polk City, Iowa. Also surviving are brother Bill (Jolene) Johnson of Madison, South Dakota, sister Mary Steinbis of Santa Rosa, California, sister Fran McMahon of Roseville, California, sister Lorraine (Stewart) Tidblom of Austin, Texas, and brother-in-law Buz (Georgia) Rumrill of Silver Lake, Minnesota, as well as 33 nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents Emily and Albin, brother Bernard Johnson, sisters RoseAnn Frederick, Helen Mosher and Barbara Lewis.
